During my spring adventure in Yellowstone in 2024, as I drove back to my hotel in Gardiner, Montana from Lamar Valley, I found myself yearning for a closer encounter with a wolf. The pack in Lamar Valley had been too distant to appreciate fully. As I scanned the landscape, a distant black shape caught my eye, moving purposefully across the open field toward me. With a surge of excitement, I slammed on the brakes and pulled into a turnout. "Don't mess this up," I reminded myself.
Exiting the truck, I positioned myself carefully, equipped with my Canon R5 and a 600mm F4ii lens, maintaining a respectful distance. I crouched low, aligning myself at eye level with the wolf, and began capturing a series of photos. It was a breathtaking sight—a majestic animal before me, its gaze seemingly piercing through my camera lens into my very soul.
Incredibly, the moment passed quickly as the wolf crossed the road and disappeared over the hills. I marveled at my luck and the sharp settings I had chosen on that cloudy day. Keeping my camera close at hand had paid off in the most unforgettable way—an exhilarating experience for any wildlife photographer.
